The Story

These clients were coming to end of their barn conversion a few miles outside Southampton. The kitchen units were already installed, and they had selected a door from Ikea’s range for the wall and tall units. They wanted me to make some doors in black to complement these for the island and base units.

After some discussion we decided to use Formica on birch plywood. The integral handles were to be in oak to go with the Ikea doors. We also agreed to use oak on the edges of the end panels.

I visited the site to check how the island units had been installed to get exact dimensions for the end panels. Whilst there we agreed on stopping the handles before the end of each run of units as this helps create a bespoke look. I was also able to check dimensions for the seating recess at one end of the island.

Having ordered the Formica boards prior to my visit, I was able to deliver everything three weeks later.
