This was a straight forward commission. The client knew what she wanted and having seen that I could do this work, asked me to coordinate with her builder to make it.
Part of the design was the bespoke book case. This was not as simple as it first appears, because the outer face of it need to be exactly in line with the face of the doors, but it also had to fit next to the wall. This meant that the width of the book case could not be determined until the units were in place. There were also some other pieces that were site specific – a tall unit was reduced in width and so required a bespoke door. The ovens were not from Ikea and I prefer to have these fitted first before determining the exact height of the door above.
The builder and I worked out a schedule that meant on this occasion he fitted all the units without having the doors. I then came in to take measurements for the doors and bookcase. Because we had an agreed schedule that the builder kept to, I was able to deliver everything three weeks after my visit to take measurements. During this time, the worktop company were able to template, make and fit the worktop and splashbacks.
Valchromat is similar to mdf except that it is denser and has a dye put in during the manufacturing process. This gives it a consistent colour throughout the thickness of the board.
